MEHAN FAMILY CELBRATES 83rd YEAR AT THE ILLINOIS STATE FAIR

Family to be recognized at 2017 Ag Day Brunch

SPRINGFIELD, IL – “Freeze your teeth and give your tongue a sleigh ride,” that’s how the Mehan family describes their famous lemon shake-ups that you can find along Main Street at the Illinois State Fair.  This year, the Mehan family is celebrating its 83rdyear as vendors on the Illinois State Fairgrounds.

This year’s fair theme is Generations of Fun.  While fairgoers have been bringing their families to the fair for generations, so have our vendors.  This year, we want to highlight the important role those vendors play in making the Illinois State Fair a success each year.  To show our appreciation for the Mehan’s, State Fair Manager Kevin Gordon will present the Mehan family with the Friend of the Illinois State Fair award on Tuesday at the 2017 Ag Day Brunch.

As with many vendors, this 11-day event is a busy time for the Mehan family. Jane (Mehan) Baird and her brother Jeff Mehan have continued this family owned and operated tradition for many years.  In talking with Jeff Mehan, he can easily recall selling lemonade and snow cones for as long as he can remember.

James Francis Mehan, grandfather to both Jane Baird and Jeff Mehan, started Mehan’s Lemonade in 1934 with nothing but “two barrels & a plank.”  Jane and Jeff stated it was Grandpa James’ determination that would be the foundation of their family business.

Jane Baird will tell anyone she knows that of the best aspects about working out at the fairgrounds during the Illinois State Fair is the connections and relationships that vendors are able to build with other people. “We’re all like family,” said Baird when discussing the vendors who call the Illinois State Fair home each and every August.

The Mehan’s enjoy their time at the Illinois State Fair and hope to continue their family tradition for many years to come.  Mehan’s Lemonade is located on Main Street near the entrance to Ethnic Village. Fairgoers can stop by to enjoy their signature lemonade, a variety of fair food snacks and more.
