Director Poe: “Friday Night a True Testament of the Spirit of Illinois Agriculture”

SPRINGFIELD, IL- Thirteen hours after torrential rains dumped more than five inches of rain on the Illinois State Fairgrounds, state fair officials once again opened the gates to eager fairgoers.

The National Weather Service in Lincoln reports 5.1″ of rain fell within a two hour time period.  The hardest hit area on the fairgrounds was the Happy Hollow area where 78 campers were parked.  Of those, 54 campers were uninhabitable on Friday night.  Thanks to our partners at the National Weather Service and Illinois State Police, fair officials received advance notice of the approaching storm, which prompted necessary evacuations, and thus there were no reports of injuries or loss of life to people or animals.

“Overnight crews were dispatched to buildings and barns to assess the facilities for any damage or flooding,” said State Fair Manager Kevin Gordon. “At first light another round of crews entered the Happy Hollow area to survey for any damage. At this point, we are confident it is once again safe to welcome fairgoers back to the fairgrounds.”

Many of the owners of the damaged campers are exhibitor families who stay on the grounds to tend to their livestock around the clock.  The Red Cross assisted five campers who needed overnight accommodations.

“Friday night we witnessed the true spirit of Illinois agriculture. Neighbors helping neighbors when the going gets rough,” said Director Raymond Poe.  “In the barns we had families helping families sweep water out of stalls, exhibitor families taking in fellow exhibitor families who did not have a place to stay but needed to be close to their livestock.  The kindness and compassion of the agriculture community is something to be admired and applauded.”

For safety purposes, accesses to the camping area of Happy Hollow is restricted at this time and until further notice.  Crews will be going camper to camper to clear each unit for owners to return.   Meanwhile, crews from the Sangamon County Department of Public Health and Illinois Department of Labor will be on the grounds assisting vendors who may have been impacted by Friday night’s storm.

A handful of shows, such as Master Showmanship and the Society Horse Show, were postponed Friday night. The Society Horse Show is currently underway, and Master Showmanship has been rescheduled for tonight at 7pm.

In addition the following Saturday events have been canceled or rescheduled:

  • Abe Lincoln Quarter Midget Races

  • Harness Racing

    • Next race days will be Tuesday at noon, Wednesday at noon

    • All of Saturday’s events will be consolidated into Tuesday & Wednesday races

    • A schedule of those races will be posted as soon as possible.
